Living a Healthy Life - Chronic Pain Self-Management

The Area Agency on Aging of the Capital Area is conducting online versions of its Chronic Pain Self–Management programs, which were developed at Stanford to help older adults better manage their pain. These courses are offered to adults 60 years of age or older experiencing chronic pain.

During the program, participants will learn:

  • Techniques to deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation
  • Moving easy exercise and nutrition for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance
  • Appropriate use of medications
  • Pacing activity and rest
  • Communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals

This program runs for six weeks and will be delivered online. Participates will need to be able attend using a computer, laptop or mobile device. The course will be from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursdays, August 13 through September 17. Class size is limited. There is no cost to attend.

Striking a Balance: How Caregiving Has Changed Since COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed may things in our lives, but especially important to understand how it has changed caregiving. This Striking a Balance webinar session will discuss changes to caregiving techniques, so caregivers can better provide safer care for their loved ones.

This session, led by the AARP, kicks off the Area Agency on Aging of the Capital Area (AAACAP) and AGE of Central Texas' Striking a Balance Family Caregiver Conference. Living a Healthy Life - Diabetes Self-Management

The Area Agency on Aging of the Capital Area (AAACAP) will conduct its 6-week, health and wellness program — Diabetes Self-Management. This evidence based intervention (EBI) course provides insight and teaches skills that help people better manage their or their loved one’s Type-2 diabetes.

Using a group setting that allows for a shared learning experience, the program teaches techniques to prevent low blood sugar, monitor nutrition, plan low fat meals and control stress. It provides methods that assist you in communicating with your doctors, set weekly goals to improve your health and control the diabetes, and take care of your feet.

The program is intended for those living with Type-2 diabetes and who are interested in symptom and treatment management. Attendees should want to learn about proper exercise and nutrition and want to learn what questions to ask about diabetes.

AAACAP will conduct this course online, so attendees will need a computer, laptop or mobile device. Course will be from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays, August 18 through September 22. Class size is limited. There is no cost to attend.

Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions

The Area Agency on Aging of the Capital Area is conducting online versions of the Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions program for older adults. This six-week, evidence-based program teaches older adults, 60 and older, with chronic illnesses the skills needed in the day-to-day management of treatment and to maintain and increase one’s activities.

The online program will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 25 through September 29.

Using a group setting to give a shared learning experience, the program teaches techniques that will let individuals do the following:

  • Manage Symptoms
  • Incorporate Exercise
  • Monitor Nutrition
  • Talk with Your Doctor
  • Make Informed Treatment Decisions
  • Deal with Emotions
