Your Partner in Serving Older Adults, Persons With Disabilities & Caregivers

This free workshop is for nonprofit, healthcare and government professional care managers. It provides an overview of the many services and resources provided by the Area Agency on Aging of the Capital Area and the Aging and Disability Resource Center of the Capital Area.

Topics to be covered will include:

  • Public Benefits such as Medicare
  • Nutrition Services
  • Care Coordination
  • Caregiver Support and Respite Care
  • Long-Term Care Application Process
  • Health and Wellness Education Programs
  • Ombudsman Services for Nursing and Assisted Living Facilities

CAPCOG will hold this virtual workshop in two parts. The first will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Oct. 22, 2021, and the second well be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Oct. 29, 2021. CAPCOG will distribute links to join the workshop via email to registrants closer to the event date.

Online - Living a Healthy Life - Chronic Pain Self-Management Program

The Area Agency on Aging of the Capital Area is conducting online versions of its Chronic Pain Self–Management program, which were developed at Stanford to help older adults better manage their pain. This program is offered to adults 60 years of age or older experiencing chronic pain.

During the program, participants will learn:

  • Techniques deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation
  • Easy exercises and nutrition plans for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance
  • Appropriate use of medications
  • Pacing activity and rest
  • Communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals

This program runs for six weeks and will delivered online. Participates will need to be able attend using a computer or mobile device. This course is being offered based on interest.

A Matter of Balance

This award-winning program is designed to help those who are 60 years old or older to manage falls and increase their activity levels.

Older adults who participate in this class will learn to: 

  • view falls as controllable
  • set goals for increasing activity
  • reduce fall risks at home
  • exercise to increase strength and balance

A Matter a Balance is an nine-week course that is taught once a week for two hours. It is ideal for older adults who:

  • are concerned about falls
  • interested in improving balance, flexibility and strength
  • have fallen in the past
  • have restricted activities because of concerns about falling
  • are able to problem solve and remember discussions

This program will be delivered online based on interest. Participates will need to be able attend using a computer, smartphone or tablet.

Online - Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions

The Area Agency on Aging of the Capital Area is conducting online versions of the Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions program for older adults. This six-week, evidence-based program teaches older adults, 60 and older, with chronic illnesses the skills needed in the day-to-day management of treatment and to maintain and increase one’s activities. This program will be offered based on interest.

Using a group setting to give a shared learning experience, the program provides techniques that will help people:

  • Manage symptoms
  • Incorporate exercise
  • Monitor nutrition
  • Talk with their doctor
  • Make informed treatment decisions
  • Deal with emotions

This program runs for six weeks and will be delivered online. Participates will need to be able attend using a computer, smartphone or tablet.

The course is free, but participation is limited.

Striking a Balance: The Daytripper - Anniversary Keynote Event

This keynote event was moved to January 22, 2022 due to the rise in COVID-19 cases. Please check back for registrations.

This in-person, keynote event will feature Chet Garner, creator, host, executive producer and writer of the The Daytripper, a five-time Emmy-award-winning program on PBS.

Garner was born and raised in Texas and loves storytelling. He brings the same enthusiasm to his speaking events that is seen in “The Daytripper”, and aims to create contagious energy that will have every attendant walk away inspired and excited about Texas, daytripping, and finding their own passion in life. Garner is a graduate of UT-Austin and Baylor Law School. After a practicing law for three years, he followed his passion to inspire his follow Texans to appericate the beauty, history and food of Texas.
