Basic Peace Officer Course (BPOC) No. 101 is anticipated to start April 15, 2024, and will be located at CAPCOG in Austin. (Prospective cadets will be notified promptly if dates or locations change.) The course is a 7- and a half-month, full-time, day BPOC which runs from about 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a one hour lunch break, Monday through Thursdays. Hours may vary depending on courses taught. The course is anticipated to conclude in late November.

BPOCs are designed to meet the initial training requirements mandated by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) for becoming a certified Texas peace officer and to prepare students to take the state’s Peace Officer Licensing Exam. BPOC topics are taught by TCOLE certified peace officers to meet standardized objectives and to prepare students for the realities of working as a peace officer. Many subjects are taught in an academic classroom setting and others such as defensive tactics, firearms and driving are taught as hands-on practical lessons. Cadets will also participate in physical fitness training for overall health.

Prospective self-sponsored BPOC cadets, those not employed by a law enforcement agency, need to pass the Peace Officer Entrance Exam before qualifying for enrollment in BPOC No. 101.

Register for a posted entrance exam on this website to be added to the possible enrollment list.

About the Exam

The timed exam is a four-part test covering basic mathematics — calculators are not allowed, reading comprehension, grammar and writing skills. Candidates must score at least a 75 average calculated on all four sections. Further BPOC Enrollment instructions will be given after the exam, so please be prepared to stay for at least another hour or so more for important information.

Special Instructions

Law Enforcement agencies that want to sponsor cadets, an agency-hired cadet, in this academy should email [email protected] to obtain the agency-hired enrollment packet. Agencies will complete the necessary background investigations to qualify their prospective cadets but will need to also complete the Declaration of Licensing Course Eligibility form and Cadet Sponsorship forms to enroll agency-hired cadets.

Family Night

Family night, an introduction to the course for the cadets and their family, will be held April 11, 2024.

Payment Deadlines

In order to be enrolled in the course, all payments must be received by CAPCOG. Course enrollment will end once all seats are sold.

Uniform costs are due on March 29, 2024.

All required forms and tuition are due April 4, 2024.

Only money orders or cashier’s checks are accepted as payment. There are no refunds after the first day of class.
